Overview

This is the third stage of a five-stage program which will take students through a formal, detailed, and holistic study of the Hanafi school via a pedagogically sound and structured curriculum. The carefully curated works chosen for the program focus on instilling a strong, principled, and in-depth understanding of the Hanafi school in every participant. You can learn more about the program here.

At Level Two, students will study a treatise written by the assistant to the last Shaykh al-Islam of the Ottoman Empire, Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari, to review and strengthen their understanding of Kufan inherited practice and its centrality to the Hanafi tradition. For Legal Theory, Samt al-Wusul will be studied, a work which is considered one of the best abridgements of the Manar. Through the reading of the authoritative text, Mukhtasar al-Quduri, students will continue their principled study of the madhhab of Imam Abu Hanifa, and learn its underlying maxims and theory. The specialised text for this course is Ibn al-Humam’s Zad al-Faqir, a semi-detailed compendium of rulings of the purification and prayer which  serves as a useful preparatory text for an upcoming study of the Maraqi al-Falah. Students will also cover the Musnad of Imam Abu Hanifa, a text which has received much attention from the scholarly class. Students will also complete a reading and study of al-Fiqh al-Akbar, a key work of theology ascribed to Imam Abu Hanifa, and much loved by the Ottoman scholarly elites. Finally, students will study inward fiqh, namely, the proper etiquettes of practising the shariʿa in one’s life from the beautiful work, Shirʿat al-Islam.

Testimonials

The Level Two HLCP course was truly transformative. As well the as the subject matter, Sheikh Tabraze's deep knowledge, sincerity, and passion for all things Hanafi made complex topics clear and easy to grasp. Each lesson strengthened our understanding of Hanafi fiqh and built upon the previous levels in a way that only a master of the field could. I am eternally grateful to Allah for being guided to the door of Sheikh Tabraze and the HLCP - I would most definitely recommend signing up.

Level 2 of the HLCP taught me much more than just what the rulings and reasonings behind rulings are. Shaykh Tabraze taught us to actively engage with the material, based on the foundational rulings and principles that we had learned previously in Foundations and Level 1. We learned to see the Hanafi tradition as neither an unscalable mountain which tolerates no critical examination, nor a dead and dusty thing which can only be copied from without relevance to our day today. We learned to engage and understand the tradition as a living thing, eminently relevant to our day and age in general, and our own lives in particular.

Alhamdulillah, journeying through the Hanafi Legal Code Program under the guidance of our esteemed Shaykh, my understanding of the Hanafi way has deepened profoundly. What I once perceived as a study limited to a few ancient mutun has been revealed to be a vast and living legacy — a sacred continuum of knowledge refined and transmitted through generations of great Hanafi jurists. Through study with the Shaykh I continue to discover new insights that strengthen my appreciation for the madhhab. His clear and methodical approach to explaining the masail, uncovering their usul, and showing the wisdom underlying the rulings has consistently illuminated my path towards understanding the sacred law. I pray that Allah keeps us steadfast upon this path and grants us the honour of becoming fuqaha, wa billahi al-tawfiq.
