Overview

This is the first stage of a five-stage program which will take students through a formal, detailed, and holistic study of the Hanafi school via a pedagogically sound and structured curriculum. The carefully curated works chosen for the program focus on instilling a strong, principled, and in-depth understanding of the Hanafi school in every participant. You can learn more about the program here.

In the Foundations Level, students will learn about the early development of Islamic Sacred Law (fiqh), with particular reference to the Hanafi school, and they will also learn about the lives of the eponymous founder and his main students. The introduction to Legal Theory via the Mabadi’ fi ‘Ilm Usul al-Fiqh gently apprises students of basic terminology with examples, leaving the details for later levels. Babarti’s Irshad al-Mustarshidin consists of a section on beliefs in accordance with the Hanafi-Maturidi tradition, and a central section covering essential fiqh from basic worship to the ethics of daily living. The specialised text for this level is the Khulasat al-Kaydani which will provide detailed guidance to students on the rules of prayer. The reading of The Forty Hanafi [Reports] will introduce a student to traditions (ahadith) which clearly support Hanafi precedent and practice. Finally, students will study the proper manners of students of sacred knowledge through a reading of the classical manual, Taʿlim al-Mutaʿallim.

Testimonials

“I would highly recommend anyone wishing to begin exploring the Hanafi school in a systematic and traditional way to undertake this course. The instructor, Shaykh Tabraze, may Allah preserve him, has an excellent manner of teaching, masha’Allah, and is very open to questions and discussion from the very outset. The distinguishing feature about the course content is its progressive and comprehensive nature, where one learns stepwise in a very structured manner. The teacher also imparts an all encompassing confidence in the madhhab, allaying and dispelling any misconceptions one may have seen or heard but unable to answer, laying a strong and conviction based foundation for further study.”

Studying HLCP Foundations with Imam Tabraze has been a transformative experience. What I appreciated most was the consistent and structured progression of the classes. They are paced productively, yet are flexible enough to accommodate life’s commitments through recorded sessions for revision and catch-up. The breadth of topics covered has been invaluable: from the etiquette of seeking knowledge, to ʿAqīdah, to Fiqh and Uṣūl of Fiqh. Together, they lay a solid and coherent foundation that have prepared me for long-term growth in the sacred sciences. For the first time in my journey, I began to see real progression and a clear sense of how the various disciplines integrate to form a complete picture. The program is pitched at the right level — deep enough to be meaningful, yet structured in a way that ensures students are not overwhelmed. Even the ancillary sciences, not explicitly covered in the course are overlooked; Imam Tabraze provides guidance on what to study in our own time to complement the HLCP Foundations curriculum. If you are serious about pursuing a grounded path of Islamic scholarship, especially with a strong footing in Fiqh, the HLCP Foundations is exactly where to begin.

I am grateful to Allah for facilitating my journey to study with Shaykh Tabraze. It has been an eye-opening, intellectually stimulating, and spiritually uplifting journey thus far, and I am only at the beginning. As I was completing the Foundations course as well as the Women's Fiqh Intensive, I found myself making intentions to continue this path of following the footsteps of the great giants of the Ḥanafī tradition and be more serious in my studies. Shaykh Tabraze engages with the students thoroughly such that you don't feel as much the distance of not being in a physical classroom. The content is rigorous and delivered very competently and insha'Allah it is a journey inward of transforming the heart into tawqa and deep heart-felt veneration of this rich tradition, as much as the intellectual acquisition of the sciences of the outward acts. I pray for barakah to spread for all those who are involved in the making of this institution and ask Allah to increase us all in beneficial knowledge.

Alhamdulillah, this course helps lay very strong foundations in Islamic studies that are rooted in the Hanafi tradition. Shaykh Tabraze has carefully crafted the curriculum to enable us to cover our fard-ayn in sufficient depth while also addressing other key matters related to aqeedah, usul, and the primary sources. This ensures that we are well-prepared for deeper and more extensive study in the upcoming levels. Shaykh Tabraze radiates the noor of the Hanafi tradition like no other, even reviving the spirit of Imam Abu Hanifa’s circle by encouraging discussion-based learning. I would certainly recommend this course both to those who wish to establish strong foundations anew and to those who have studied in an unstructured manner under different teachers, so they can set all their learning in the right perspective.

In the course, Shaykh Tabraze gives a taste of the original Hanafi tradition from all its aspects but also blends in the adab of the seeker, or any believer in general, making sure your are being mindful of your inward state throughout the course and after. Shaykh Tabraze teaches with tranquility and answers your questions with patience. I would say that anyone who wants to get the know the Hanafi tradition from beliefs to practice and tazkiya, and wants to increase in adab and practice, should take this course.
Musa H. (HOL)
“The course being led by Shaykh Tabraze is incredibly beneficial and I walked away from it knowing so much more about my tradition and how to work towards improving my prayers as well as taking a holistic approach to the tradition that is guided and grounded by a teacher with so much knowledge to pass on to us. Being able to engage with Arabic while having the translation and commentary provided for traditional texts allowed us students to go to that next level of understanding what is required of us as Muslims. In addition to this, the benefit of having a wide variety of texts that cover Usul, Fiqh and Aqidah, as well as the specialised text on prayer alongside Ta'lim al-Muta'allim provided me with all that was necessary for a foundational course into our tradition whilst keeping us grounded with our intentions.”
